Like many, if not all the Vaults throughout the events of the Fallout series, Vault 33 was more than just a shelter for the survivors of the Great War; it was the stage of a grievous experiment. Located in the global space of Fallout, the fate of the inhabitants of the Vault 33 remains obscured to the majority of the wastelands dwellers and the precise function of the vault for a long time also remains unknown.

Vault 33 Experiment

The primary aim of the Vault 33 experiment was to study behaviors and Societal dynamics among isolated people for a long term. While most other Vaults were crowded, or specifically had artificially low population numbers in order to simulate scarcity, Vault 33 was intended to have low population density. Few and varied were the selected subjects, with the purpose to discover how such company would evolve in time, with little or no intercourses with the rest of the world.

Consequently, relations where there with the high ducnty due to the low population density. A major assumption made by the experimenters was that due to a small population density the society would be tightly knit, but at the same time they expected that it would crack and fracture on issues of scarcity of resources, control and leadership. At some point, the low level of genetic variation, or the constant pressures of living in such an environment, might have unpredictable social or physiological effects. The dwellers of Vault 33 were to face these problems themselves – the methods for overcoming them were not explained or suggested by Vault-Tec, the company that initiated the Vault tests.

Vault 33 is an example of the unethical experiments that went on in the vaults and more specifically a human testing ground where people were playthings for the scientists of Vault-Tec. The results of most of these experiments however, were usually quite grim; they showed how, even in normal people, desperation, fear, and basic self preservation can turn one into a monster. The story of Vault 33, as in most other Vaults of the Fallout world is, can be seen as relatively unremarkable.
